Transportation to Start Line

Buses begin loading from the DECC parking garage area on Railroad St. for the Half Marathon events at 5:00am, Full Marathon event buses begin loading at 7:00am. Please board promptly to insure that everyone arrives at the start lines on time. There is no parking available at the start lines.

For those coming from Two Harbors, it is permissible to be dropped off at the Two Harbors Sonju car dealership and walk or skate to the start line.

Gear bag trucks will be at the start line for the half and full marathons so you can bring items to the start (sweatshirt/jacket, shoes, warm-up gear, food, etc…). Please note that you may NOT wear skates onto the start line buses. Gear bags will be delivered to the finish line by the time you are finished with your race. This service is included in race fees for all Marathon and Half Marathon races.

  • Half Marathon Skate and Rollerski gear bag truck will be in front of the start line and and will depart at 6:30 AM.
  • Half Marathon Run gear bag truck will be behind the start line (near bus drop-off area) and will depart at 6:45 AM.
  • Elite and Rollerski Marathon gear bag truck will be in front of the start line and will depart at 8:30 AM.
  • Marathon (Advanced and Rec wave) gear bag truck will depart at 9:15 AM.

PLEASE make sure that you drop your gear bags off in the correct truck before the posted departure time. If you don’t get you gear back in the truck in time, notify a race volunteer and it can be delivered to the finish line/DECC. However, late drop bags are not a priority and may take hours to reach the finish line.

We are not liable for lost or damaged items. Please do not include anything valuable or fragile in your drop bag.

Wave Info

There are six waves in the NorthShore Inline Marathon, plus Elite Waves. From fastest/most competitive, waves are Advanced Wave 1, 2, 3, and Recreation Wave 1, 2, and 3.

In order to increase safety and ease crowding, Inline Marathon skaters must register for the correct wave based on past performances and projected finish times. Please see the wave placement guide below and select the corresponding wave during the online race registration process.

All wave changes (and race changes) after submitting online registration is available on our registration site (www.tempotickets.com/nsim2020). Wave and race changes are subject to a $15 processing fee without Race Insurance Package.

Race Course


Enjoy the country’s most scenic and exciting skating and rollerski event along the beautiful North Shore of Lake Superior! The 26.2 mile marathon begins just south of Two Harbors and continues along Scenic Hwy 61, rolling through the Interstate-35 freeway tunnels, and finishing in the heart of the city at the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center. The half marathon races start at the marathon half-way point, and the Tunnel 10k races circle Duluth’s Interstate-35 freeway through six tunnels.

The entire course is completely closed to outside traffic and we strive to provide everybody with a road surface optimized for maximum smoothness every year!

Marathon Team Award Categories: Male Open, Female Open, and Co-Ed Open*, and Derby Team

Any Race Team, Skate Club or other formal or informal group of skaters can create a team to compete in the Marathon Open Team division.

Open Team Awards:

  • There is no limit to number of team members on one team, the total times from the top 5 skaters in each team will be combined to compete for an award
  • No Elite skaters are eligible for this award
  • Marathon participants only

*Male and Female must have all the same gender to be placed in their division. Co-Ed division must have at least 2 Male and 2 Female, and a total of 5 skaters or more to be eligible for awards.

Derby Team Award:

  • All skaters must be a member of a roller derby team (competitive or recreational) and have current WFTDA insurance
  • All team members must be entered in the Quad Skate division, and complete the full marathon race on quad skates
  • There is no limit to number of team members on one team, total times from the top 5 skaters in each team will be combined to compete for an award

How To Register Your Team:

  • Decide on your team name. The team name must be the same for each registrant (same spelling, capitalization, spacing, punctuation)

Directions

The NorthShore Inline Marathon & Skate Fest is centered at the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center (DECC) at 350 Harbor Drive, Duluth, MN 55802.

The Duluth Entertainment Convention Center (DECC) is located on the Duluth Waterfront, exit 256b from I-35. From the South take I-35 north and exit at Lake Ave. & 5th Ave. West (exit 256B), at the stoplight turn right, take the next immediate right down to Railroad Street, turn right onto Railroad Street then right into the DECC parking lot. From the North use Lake Ave. (exit 256B), at the stoplight turn left onto Canal Park Drive, immediately get into the right lane and turn right onto Railroad Street. After driving under skywalk turn left into DECC parking lot.

Parking

Friday and Saturday daily parking at the DECC is available for a $5 fee. The DECC also offers overnight parking for single vehicles ($10/night) & RV’s (electric hook-up ($40/day) or non-electric sites ($30/day). More information is available on the DECC website or by calling (218) 722-5573, ext.283.

There is some free parking in the area however, it is limited. No parking will be available at the start area! All participants, other than those staying in Two Harbors, are strongly urged to take the shuttle buses to the start line.

Many parking options can be paid via the Park Duluth app, which is very handy for visiting Duluth. Visit www.parkduluth.com to download the Park Duluth app on your phone.

Race Timing

Your race packet will contain an envelope with a Pro Chip, provided by Endurance Promotions (our contracted timing company for the NorthShore events) out of Maple Grove, MN. The Pro Chip is a transmitting device for timing, and is attached to a velcro ankle strap to secure to your ankle during the race. Please read the specific envelope instructions. These chips MUST be returned at the finish line as you leave the course. If your chip is not returned or lost a fee of $100 will be charged to you.

Race Bibs

If you would like your name printed on your bib you must be registered by Sunday , August 18th. Do not fold, wrinkle, or alter these numbers. The large bib should be pinned to your chest or abdomen area or right hip.

Porta-potties will be provided at all starting line areas, along the course, and at the finish line. The DECC (race finish area and Race Expo venue) has ample restrooms. Please take care of business BEFORE you head to the start line for your race and wave start. Please refrain from trespassing on private property along the course and near the full and half marathon start lines. Respect the rights of private property–the future of this race depends on it!

Helmets are mandatory at all times while on the race course for skating and rollerski races. Wrist, knee, and elbow protection are also recommended.

Rollerskiers are asked to stay to the right of the roadway. All slower athletes please stay towards the right, all faster athletes please pass on the left and announce yourself as you pass.

The entire course for all NorthShore Races is completely closed to outside traffic. All event participants must be at 26th Avenue East (entrance to the freeway) by 1:30pm be able to complete the event. This is Mile 23. The course MUST be opened to traffic at 2pm.

Please be mindful of road conditions. We strive to maintain the best road conditions possible, thanks to local entities like Minnesota Department of Transportation, City of Duluth, Saint Louis County and Lake County. However, there is always the possibility of cracks, “tar snakes”, bumps, sand and rocks, water bottles, garbage, and other obstructions.

First aid will be available on the course and at the finish line. There are vans and motorcycles on the course with medical personnel. All medical expenses incurred by participants are the responsibility of the participant.

Aid Stations

  • The Marathon course will have five aid stations at miles 6, 14, 17, 20, and 23.
  • The Half Marathon course will have three aid stations at miles 1, 4, 7, and 10.
  • The Tunnel 10k course will have one aid station at mile 3.

Aid stations will have small twist-off water bottles. Mile 23/10/3 aid station will also feature cups of electrolyte replacement (most likely Gatorade). If you need food/calories on the course, please bring them yourself.

If you are experiencing an emergency, please let aid station volunteers know, and they will be able to contact our HAM operators and medical personnel volunteers roaming the race course.

It is highly advised to carry any tools or spare parts you may need. Don’t expect volunteers to have tools handy.

Food and Hydration

Water will be provided for skaters at the start and finish. There are five water stations (10 oz. bottles) along the race course. The stations are at approximately mile marker 6, 17, 20, and 23. Each skater is responsible for their own hydration and nutritional needs during the race. There are no “energy” gels or drinks at the water stations. Bernick’s Pepsi has generously donated all hydration products for the NorthShore Races.

A fabulous array of bananas, apples, oranges, cookies and yogurt, all generously donated by Super One Foods will be available at the finish line. Thanks to Super One Foods for the continuous support of the NorthShore Races!
