Duluth, MN – As the NorthShore Inline Marathon prepares for its 28th annual race, the organization has announced a change in the race's finish line due to ongoing construction projects in the City of Duluth. While the iconic finish—descending from the freeway, passing the aquarium, circling around the DECC, and concluding next to the Irvin—has been a highlight for participants, this route is temporarily unavailable due to seawall construction on St. Louis Bay.
After careful consideration and collaboration with municipal partners, the NorthShore Inline Marathon team explored multiple alternatives. Though there was hope for a memorable finish on Historic Canal Park Drive, the unavailability of an access bridge—resulting from recent weather conditions preventing a cement pour from curing—required a shift in plans.
This year's race will now feature an exciting new finish on the Northbound Frontage Road of I-35. Racers will emerge from the tunnels, ascend the ramp to travel over the 5th Ave West overpass, and turn Northbound onto the I-35 Frontage Road for a thrilling finish on the roadway. This adjusted route presents a unique challenge while maintaining a smooth and accessible conclusion to the race.
Despite the alterations, this new finish line location offers several advantages, including convenient access to Pioneer Hall at the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center (DECC) and prime viewing opportunities for spectators along the final stretch from the south side.
Looking forward, the NorthShore Inline Marathon team is optimistic about the improvements to the traditional finish route around the DECC and near the aquarium, which are expected to be fully restored and enhanced for the 2025 race.
"We want to thank all our racers and fans for their understanding and flexibility," said Joe Haggenmiller, Operations Director. "While this year's race may look a little different, we believe it will be just as memorable and enjoyable. This is an opportunity to experience a new side of the NorthShore Inline Marathon and create unforgettable moments together."
The NorthShore Inline Marathon invites all participants and spectators to join in the excitement of this year's race, embracing the changes as part of the ever-evolving spirit of the event.
