Putting the Finishing Touches on Your Northshore Race Preparation

Training behind a bicycle or scooter and going in and out of the draft is my favorite way of getting into racing shape for the NorthShore Inline Marathon.

Having a loved one piloting the draft craft is not always the best idea: you need someone who is ruthless and willing to inflict pain.

Optimizing your workout is an inexact science. It’s really just improvisational torture or randomized intervals, like racing!

The telescope effect, a bit like stop and go traffic on the freeway, will get your legs and lungs ready for the inevitable speeding up and slowing down that typifies a race.

I call this type of training “Dangling” because you’ll learn to fight for the draft and feel what it’s like to hang on by a thread even when every cell in your body is begging you to give up.

Your pacer should alternately hang you out to dry and allow you to come back into the fold.

It’s always a feeling of accomplishment to catch back on even if the satisfaction is only short-lived.

Enjoy trying to perfect the art of the dangle. And perhaps someday you can take revenge on the sadist who helped you get ready for the races!
