It’s easy to get started with speedskating, as an inline skater, because the muscle memory, balance and coordination, and basic concept of the sport will be very familiar. Speedskating can be dangerous, so it’s best to try it out under the supervision of experts and a local club and with a facility that is set up for speedskating (with padded walls, limited traffic/other recreational skaters, etc..).
In Minnesota, the premiere speedskating rink is in Roseville, MN at The Oval. There are several speedskating clubs in Minnesota, and hundreds of clubs, groups, and speedskating facilities all around the United States. Speedskating is an Olympic sport, so the Team USA website has a lot of information on clubs, memberships, and elite athletes gearing up for the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyongyang, South Korea.
Many inline skaters use speedskating as a cross-training tool, and vice versa! Our sport’s elite athletes typically excel at both disciplines. In fact, one of our US Olympic long-track speedskating team members, Erin Jackson, has been inline skating her whole life and took up skating on ice just four months prior to the national trials race. Now, Erin is going to the Olympics and is the first African-American woman to make the long-track speedskating team!
